Meet Dr. Hannah Johnson

Dr. Hannah Johnson, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, earned both her Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders and Doctorate of Audiology from Auburn University. She is certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and is licensed to practice audiology in the State of Alabama.

Dr. Johnson engaged in multiple research studies throughout her doctoral program that explored objective measures of listening effort; she was selected as a Meritorious Poster Presenter at the 2017 American Speech-Language Hearing Association Conference. As a result of her research endeavors, Dr. Johnson values the importance of staying up to date on evidence-based practices in order to best serve her patients. In addition to experience with diagnostic audiology and treatment of hearing loss with hearing aids, Dr. Johnson has a background in cochlear implant programming.

Her favorite thing about being part of the team is the practice’s partnership with Hearing the Call, a philanthropy that seeks to “provide the gift of hearing to people around the world through sustainable, impactful hearing humanitarian trips.” Dr. Johnson found her hearing outreach trip to the School for the Deaf in Guatemala City, Guatemala to be one of the most meaningful experiences of her life and looks forward to serving on Hearing the Call trips!

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Johnson loves exploring Huntsville with her husband, Chris, and their dog, Murphy, in tow! She enjoys being active at her church, exercising near a ballet barre, and finding a binge-worthy true crime podcast!

If you could travel anywhere in the world for free, where would you go?

This is a tough one for me! So many places come to mind. If I must choose, I would say a trip to New Zealand with my husband! We want to see the picturesque landscapes and find it exciting to visit a part of the world we know so little about.

Basic Hearing Test

A basic hearing test begins with an air conduction test. You will be seated in a soundproof booth and single-use, foam earphones will be inserted into your ear canals. The Audiologist will ask you to push a button or raise your hand when you barely hear a series of beeps (tones) presented at various frequencies (pitches) to obtain your air conduction thresholds.

To determine whether your hearing loss is a conductive (mechanical) loss, sensorineural (permanent) loss or combination of the two, we perform a bone conduction test.

For this test, a head band is place on the bone behind one of the ears to obtain your bone conduction thresholds. This process provides a different form of sound transmission using vibration, which bypasses the eardrum and the middle ear bones and directly stimulates the auditory nerve. When you hear the beeps/tones, you will push a button or raise your hand.

If bone conduction thresholds are better than air conduction thresholds (through the foam inserts), you have a conductive hearing loss. This suggests a problem with the mechanical structures (moving parts) of the ears.

Conductive hearing loss is often a medically treatable condition for which we will provide you with a referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) physician. However, if bone and air conduction thresholds match, it indicates a sensorineural hearing loss (permanent), and the treatment will likely involve hearing aids.
