Did you know that your ear canal is as humid as the Amazon Rainforest?

Hearing aids are built to be worn 10+ hours a day, 7 days a week, in varying levels of humidity and heat—for years!

When I think about everything a hearing aid goes through on a daily basis, it’s astounding to me that only around 15% of hearing aids go in for repair on an annual basis.

The number one reason hearing aids are sent to the manufacturer for repair is moisture.

Even a tiny bit of liquid (0.5 microliters) in a hearing aid can cause a significant decrease in volume or even complete failure.

Because of this, we now offer a treatment called the Redux system. In just 12 minutes, the Redux can remove any moisture in the device.

The system works by creating a vacuum chamber that lowers the boiling point of water, then raises the temperature of the hearing aids to evaporate 100% of the moisture.

What I love about the Redux is how much time it’s already saved us and our patients in the few weeks we’ve used it.

At least one hearing aid a week is saved from being sent off for repair, and countless others are improved from “working okay” to “working just like new.”

Just last week, I had a patient come in reporting static in their hearing aid. Before having our Redux system, that would have been an automatic red flag for me to send her hearing aid in for repair—meaning she would be without her hearing aid for about 2 weeks.

Instead, I used Redux and got her hearing aid back up and running like new in just 12 minutes.

The Redux is used at every routine hearing aid check appointment and whenever someone drops off their hearing aid for repair and recovery.

If you would like to schedule an appointment for hearing aid maintenance and a Redux treatment, please call us at 256-319-4327.

Do you know somebody that needs to see this? Why not share it?

    Basic Hearing Test

A basic hearing test begins with an air conduction test. You will be seated in a soundproof booth and single-use, foam earphones will be inserted into your ear canals. The Audiologist will ask you to push a button or raise your hand when you barely hear a series of beeps (tones) presented at various frequencies (pitches) to obtain your air conduction thresholds.

To determine whether your hearing loss is a conductive (mechanical) loss, sensorineural (permanent) loss or combination of the two, we perform a bone conduction test.

For this test, a head band is place on the bone behind one of the ears to obtain your bone conduction thresholds. This process provides a different form of sound transmission using vibration, which bypasses the eardrum and the middle ear bones and directly stimulates the auditory nerve. When you hear the beeps/tones, you will push a button or raise your hand.

If bone conduction thresholds are better than air conduction thresholds (through the foam inserts), you have a conductive hearing loss. This suggests a problem with the mechanical structures (moving parts) of the ears.

Conductive hearing loss is often a medically treatable condition for which we will provide you with a referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) physician. However, if bone and air conduction thresholds match, it indicates a sensorineural hearing loss (permanent), and the treatment will likely involve hearing aids.
