The ability to hear is critical to participate and enjoy daily living, allowing us to communicate, socialize, and navigate our surroundings. Unfortunately, a lot of people are affected with hearing difficulties due to aging, genetics, exposure to loud noises, or medical conditions. That’s where audiologists come in.

What is an audiologist?

An audiologist is a healthcare professional with specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders. They hold a doctoral degree in audiology, which is a four-year program focused on the study of the auditory and vestibular systems.

Audiologists work with people of all ages to help them hear better and communicate more effectively. They also assist people with vestibular disorders.

Alabama Hearing Associates connects you to expert audiologists in Madison, AL, Huntsville, AL, and The Shoals.

What do audiologists do?

Audiologists use a variety of tests and tools to assess hearing and balance. They are knowledgeable in the following hearing diagnostics and evaluation:

  • Audiometry
  • Speech testing
  • Tympanometry
  • Acoustic Reflexes
  • Distortion product otoacoustic emissions

Audiologists also provide treatment options to address hearing loss such as hearing aids, assistive listening devices, cochlear implants, and vestibular rehabilitation therapy. They may also recommend and fit custom hearing protection such as ear molds and ear plugs.

Additionally, audiologists can collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as ENTs and speech-language pathologists, to provide holistic care.

What makes an audiologist different from other hearing care providers?

It is important to be aware of the differences between audiologists and other hearing care providers (i.e hearing aid dispensers or hearing instrument specialists).

While hearing aid dispensers may be licensed to sell and fit hearing aids, they don’t have the same level of education, expertise, and training as audiologists.

Audiologists possess a deep understanding of the complex auditory and vestibular systems and stay up-to-date with the latest research and technology in the field.  They are qualified and licensed to diagnose and treat hearing and balance disorders and provide personalized care and counseling to patients and their families.

What is the education and training needed to be an audiologist?

Below is an overview of the education and training required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.): After acquiring a bachelor’s, a graduate degree in audiology must be acquired. While most programs award an Au.D. degree, a Master’s degree in Audiology is also eligible.
  • Clinical Practicum: During their graduate program, aspiring audiologists must complete a certain number of clinical practicum hours under the supervision of a licensed audiologist. These practicum hours provide hands-on experience for future clinical practice.
  • Licensing: Once the required degrees and practicum hours are completed, licensing is next. An audiologist must obtain a state license in the respective location where he or she intends to practice.

Note: Licensing requirements vary by state.

What To Expect At An Audiologist’s Appointment

An appointment with an audiologist involves several steps to assess your hearing health and detect any potential hearing loss.

Here is what you can expect at an audiologist’s appointment:

It starts with a medical history review followed by comprehensive hearing tests.

Once the tests are done, discussion will be next along with possible hearing aid selection/evaluation (if hearing loss is present).

Next will be hearing aid fitting and programming and lastly, follow-up and monitoring.

The audiologist may schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure the hearing aids are working properly and to make adjustments as necessary.
